Aztec Day at Colkirk CofE Primary Academy

March 12, 2024

Children of Colkirk CofE Primary Academy enjoyed learning some dances as part of their Aztec Day this week.  They delighted in exploring musical instruments, being decorated with face paints, wearing masks and learning the significance and actions of the dances.  This was led by Lorraine Theobald of www.multiculturaldance.co.uk.

Class teacher, Melanie Coleman said, “The children had a wonderful time.  In class feedback they were buzzing with enthusiasm to tell their point of view.  Some liked the serpent dance the best and others loved the maiden dance where the boys had to avert their eyes from any maiden (which a few exclaimed “was torture!” whilst another reflected on this being “an interesting part of their religious and cultural beliefs.”). My favourite thing was that they all joined in without hesitation or reservation and many were so creative with their movements!”

These Year 4, 5 and 6 children ended the day trying Aztec foods as well as making and playing Aztec board games that expressed their knowledge and understanding of this historical culture they have studied, which is so different to our own.  “It was the best day ever!” said JT.
