Jayne Hill, Head of School at Middleton Church of England Primary Academy said: “We know that encouraging our pupils to read for pleasure is one of the most important ways we can help our pupils to become readers for life, help with spelling, provide them with examples of types of writing and allow them to become lifelong, independent learners. I was keen for our library to be a space where pupils wanted to go and spend time but also make it easier for them to select the types of books they like to read. When books are just alphabetical, it can be difficult to choose if you do not know the name of a specific author. Therefore, I engaged one of our Teaching Assistants in some art projects (which she did partly in her own time) to define areas. We worked hard together to produce some results which made the children say, “Wow!” as they entered. The children love it and their reading environment is enjoyable. We plan to refresh the books each half term.”
